The inspector is not there to judge whether you installed your system yourself. They are there to confirm that the approved plans, the equipment on the wall and roof, and the safety details all match. A solid solar inspection preparation guide helps you avoid the most frustrating DIY solar delay: a small, fixable item that turns one inspection into two.
For a homeowner-managed project, inspection readiness starts well before the appointment. Your permit package, system design, equipment choices, and installation work need to tell the same story. When they do, you can move through final approval and utility interconnection without handing control of the project to a high-priced solar contractor.
Start With the Approved Permit Set
Your approved plans are the baseline for the inspection. Do not prepare from an old design file, a sales proposal, or a product list alone. Pull out the stamped or approved permit set and compare it with what was actually installed.
Confirm the module count, array location, inverter model, battery equipment if applicable, disconnect locations, conduit routes, wire sizes, breaker sizes, and service-panel details. Inspectors commonly compare nameplate ratings and model numbers to the plans. A substitution can be acceptable, but it may require revised plans or approval from the authority having jurisdiction before the inspection.
This is where homeowners can save time by being honest about changes. If the original inverter was unavailable and you used a different approved model, address it before inspection day. Do not assume similar equipment will be treated as identical. Electrical ratings, rapid shutdown methods, and labeling requirements can differ.
Keep a clean printed copy of the approved plans available at the site. Some jurisdictions accept digital plans, but a printed set still makes it easier to answer questions when cell service is weak or the inspector wants to mark a page.
Solar Inspection Preparation Guide: Check What Inspectors Can See
A final solar inspection is usually a visual check of safety, workmanship, and code compliance. The exact checklist depends on your city or county, your utility, the edition of the National Electrical Code adopted locally, and whether your project includes storage. Still, a few areas deserve careful attention on nearly every residential system.
Verify the array and roof work
The array should match the approved layout and respect required roof setbacks. Rails, attachments, clamps, and modules should be installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Inspectors may look for properly seated modules, correct end clamps, secure bonding, protected wiring, and orderly cable management beneath the array.
Loose conductors hanging on the roof are an avoidable problem. PV wire should be supported with listed clips or other approved methods and kept away from sharp edges, roofing surfaces, and places where it could be damaged. If junction boxes or module-level electronics are visible, make sure covers are secure and unused openings are properly closed.
Roof penetrations deserve extra attention. Flashing, sealant methods, and attachment spacing should follow the engineered plan and mounting manufacturer requirements. The inspector may not perform a water test, but obvious installation issues can raise questions about whether the work was completed as designed.
Inspect electrical pathways and equipment
Walk the full electrical route from the roof to the inverter, combiner or junction boxes, disconnects, batteries, and service equipment. Conduit must be supported, fittings must be secure, and conductors must be protected where they enter equipment. Outdoor equipment needs the correct weather-rated enclosures and fittings.
Open each accessible equipment door and look for unfinished details: missing knock-out seals, unlabeled breakers, loose wire strands, unsupported conduit, or covers that will not close. Make sure required working clearances are maintained around electrical equipment. Storage boxes, patio furniture, and garden tools should not block an inverter, disconnect, or service panel.
At the service panel, confirm that the solar breaker is in the planned location and matches the approved design. Panel busbar calculations, backfeed breaker placement, and breaker sizing are not cosmetic details. They are central to safe interconnection. If your design calls for a line-side tap, supply-side connection, or derate, the finished work should match the drawings exactly.
If you are not qualified or legally permitted to perform a particular electrical task in your jurisdiction, bring in a licensed electrician. Managing a DIY project does not mean guessing at high-voltage electrical work or local licensing rules.
Labels Are Small but Critical
Labels are one of the most common causes of solar inspection corrections because they are easy to postpone. They also communicate critical information to utility crews, electricians, and first responders. Treat them as part of the system, not a finishing touch.
Your permit plans should identify the required placards and their locations. Depending on the system, this can include PV system disconnect labels, rapid shutdown labels, service equipment warnings, directory placards, dual-power-source markings, battery labels, and labels identifying the location of remote disconnecting means.
Use durable, code-appropriate labels that can withstand sun and weather. Handwritten tape labels may be useful while organizing equipment, but they are not a final inspection solution. Apply labels where they can be seen without opening equipment whenever the requirement calls for exterior identification.
Check that the wording matches your local requirement and the approved plan. Requirements have changed across NEC editions, particularly around rapid shutdown and energy storage. A label kit that worked for a neighbor’s older system may not fit your project.
Prepare for Rough Inspections When Required
Not every jurisdiction uses the same inspection sequence. Some schedule one final inspection after the work is complete. Others require a rough electrical inspection before walls are closed, or separate inspections for structural work, electrical work, and battery storage.
Read your permit conditions before scheduling anything. If a rough inspection is required, do not cover conduit, wiring, grounding connections, or structural attachments too early. Take clear photos during installation as well. Photos are not always a substitute for an inspection, but they can help explain concealed work if an inspector asks how a component was installed.
Battery projects often bring additional requirements. Clearances, mounting height, protection from vehicle impact, ventilation requirements where applicable, and emergency disconnect identification can all matter. Your local fire authority may also have requirements beyond the electrical inspection process.
Make Inspection Day Easy
An inspection appointment should not begin with a search for keys, plans, or equipment locations. Make sure an adult with authority to discuss the project is present, or provide clear access instructions if your jurisdiction allows unattended inspections.
Before the appointment, unlock gates, secure pets, clear access to the roof route and electrical equipment, and make sure the service panel, inverter, disconnects, and batteries are accessible. Have the approved plans, permit card, equipment cut sheets if requested, and any revision approvals ready.
Do not energize equipment in a way that conflicts with your permit or utility requirements. Many utilities require final inspection approval before permission to operate. Your system may be physically complete, but exporting power before authorization can create avoidable utility problems.
It also helps to complete a homeowner walk-through the evening before. Stand in front of every piece of equipment and ask three simple questions: Is it secure? Is it labeled? Does it match the plans? That short check catches more issues than a last-minute scramble on inspection morning.

A correction notice is not a failed solar project. It is a specific list of items the inspector needs addressed before approval. Read the language closely, take photos of the cited condition, and avoid making unrelated changes that could create a new issue.

Others point to a design mismatch or a code question that needs a more careful response. When that happens, get guidance before changing wiring, breakers, or equipment connections.
